Sources and Editorial Method
The government, court, library, archive, map, population, and local-history sources used by this guide.
Every local claim on this site should be traceable to a named source. Priority goes to Whitley County government, Indiana Courts, the Indiana State Library, Indiana’s official population program, federal publications, and identified local repositories. A source link supports the statement attached to it; it does not turn an index into an original record or a later history into contemporary evidence.
County history and government
- Current Whitley County government directory — office functions, current contacts, service instructions, and the current File Management listing.
- Whitley County comprehensive plan — county formation, Indigenous context, settlement, railroads, communities, and development history.
- Earlier county comprehensive plan — Lincoln Highway, Lincolnway, and US 30 chronology.
- IN.gov Whitley County profile — county name and state-level place context.
- Indiana State Library by-county directory — libraries, officials, and additional county notes.
Records, courts, and archival holdings
- Indiana State Library Whitley County research guide — marriage, death, naturalization, landowner, probate, newspaper, directory, and local-repository holdings.
- Indiana State Library Whitley County microfilm inventory — dated probate, will, Circuit Court, Common Pleas, and township record series.
- Whitley County Files Department archival inventory — indexed description of older Clerk, Auditor, Treasurer, and Recorder material. Its contact block is older than the current File Management directory, so this site uses it for collection coverage and the current county directory for contact details.
- Indiana Courts: Whitley County and the Indiana court directory — court structure, contacts, local rules, mycase route, and copy guidance.
Maps, books, newspapers, and digital collections
- Whitley County maps, atlases, and plat books — cataloged editions from the 1862 landowner map through later plat books.
- Whitley County history holdings — the 1883 and 1907 histories, specialized studies, bulletins, family history, and pictorial volumes.
- 1880 Census periodical catalog — named newspaper titles for Columbia City, Churubusco, and South Whitley.
- Historical Whitley County at Indiana Memory — photographs, documents, oral histories, cemetery, obituary, military, and bulletin-index material.
- Whitley County Historical Museum genealogy resources and Genealogical Society of Whitley County — local collection and index discovery. Older local contact details are not repeated without current confirmation.
Population sources
- STATS Indiana 2025 city and town estimates — Columbia City, Churubusco, Larwill, and South Whitley.
- STATS Indiana 2025 township estimates — Cleveland, Columbia, Etna-Troy, Jefferson, Richland, Smith, Thorncreek, Union, and Washington townships.
Corrections and uncertainty
Office contacts on this site were checked on July 28, 2026 and are accompanied by an official source; readers should still confirm before travel. When official sources differ—such as 1838 versus 1839 wording for county organization—the conflict is disclosed. A correction should identify the page, disputed statement, and a stronger source. Unsupported additions and private resident information are not published.
