Birth Records

Whitley County custodians and documented historical holdings for birth records.

Birth Records in Whitley County are divided between current custodians and historical collections. The correct starting point is Whitley County Health Department; the date and document type determine whether the item is at a county counter, in the Files Department, on State Library microfilm, or in a derivative index.

Current route

Request current or certified birth records from the Health Department under Indiana eligibility, identification, and fee rules.

Documented historical coverage

The Indiana State Library county guide directs researchers to the Health Department for original birth records; it does not publish a Whitley County birth-index range on that guide.

Information to provide

For birth records, prepare full name at birth, event date, place, parents’ names when known, relationship, and permitted purpose. Preserve every volume, page, case, instrument, certificate, film, or image identifier supplied by an index. Ask whether the result is an index, transcript, record image, ordinary copy, or certified copy.

How to evaluate birth records

Read the birth records headings and continuation pages, identify who supplied the information, and compare the item with an independent source when the conclusion matters. A negative search covers only the named collection and date range; it does not prove the event never occurred. Privacy and court-access restrictions still apply to searchable records.

Continue from this record type

Use the health department guide, Files Department inventory, and research-log guide to continue a birth records search.
