History of Whitley County, Indiana
Whitley County was created in 1835 from Allen and Elkhart counties. The county’s adopted comprehensive plan says it was formally organized in 1838, when centrally located Columbia was chosen as the county seat. The first railroad from Fort Wayne reached Columbia City in 1856; another line connected South Whitley and Churubusco in 1871; a southern line followed in the 1890s.
