Kerens was incorporated in 1881. Railway built a narrow gauge line through Navarro County and surveyed a townsite, which was named for an official with that railroad. Kerens is known as the “Birthplace of Big Tex” — although that's not who he was when he started!

In 1844, settlers began to trickle into this area and a settlement began along Red Oak Creek near the present site of Ovilla. One of the first to settle, Colonel James E. Patton and his family originally settled on the creek below the Billingsley Fort, but in 1845, relocated to the present site of Red Oak.
On September 13, 1954, the citizens in the area now known as Sunset Valley voted to incorporate as a town. They elected Clinton Vilven to serve as the first mayor of the area which now measures a little over 681 acres. Today, we remain a relatively small town, but there certainly have been a lot of changes and growth.
The town of Goldthwaite was founded after the Santa Fe Railroad arrived in 1885 and was named for the railway official who auctioned off town lots. From 1869 – 1897, Mills County struggled with Indian attacks, outlaws, and vigilante justice.
The town was laid off by the Texas and New Orleans Railroad when it reached the community in 1901 and was named after D. A. Poynor, a surveyor for the line. The post office was called Poyner from its opening in 1902 to 1919, when the name was corrected to Poynor.

The land belonged to John Bunyan Slaughter, as it was on his U Lazy S Ranch. In 1906, Slaughter sold it to C. W. Post, the breakfast cereal manufacturer, who founded "Post City" as a utopian colonizing venture in 1907. Post devised the community as a model town.
Settlers first came to the area in the 1850s. The city was named after a lonely oak tree in the prairie. A post office was established in 1869. Tracks of the Missouri, Kansas, and Texas Railroad were built through the area in 1890, and Lone Oak was incorporated that same year.
